Talk about inspiration! Go see caramelcaramelo blog for some incredible images from the Arts de l'Islam show at L'Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris. These horses (and the gorgeous calligraphy) are really inspiring me today. Thanks, Kenza!

  2. That has nothing do to with Islam. That is in persian! persian poetry, calligraophy, and persian minature art are quite different things than islamic art. persians went through so much to keep their art a live to this day despite immense pressure from arabs and muslim extremists. yet, muslims get credit for this art.

  4. Anon, I had to go back in to the link and read the wording of their description of the show. I am not perfect at reading French, so I can only get the gist of it, which seems to be that they are using the word "Islam" to encompass a wide range of countries and cultures. I'm assuming this means that there is art originating from various areas and people in this show. If I'm reading your comment correctly, what you're saying is that they are lumping Persia in with Islam when by rights Persia was not a part of the Islamic nation. Is that correct? If so, I am suprised that the curators of this show didn't make that distinction. That said, I know nothing about the IMA.
I need to look deeper into the origins of this work myself, at any rate, because I find it incredibly beautiful.
Also, I had a great, great grandfather who was Persian, I'm told, so it's meaningful to me.

  5. you understood me correctly. it is frustrating to me because i am persian and I know my people payed an exorbitant price to keep our identity alive to this day despite all the pressures from arabs and muslims. i cant really read the script because it is written in ancient persian. For instance, i can only read a sentence on upper right hand side that says" it is bad to buy this type of horse." however, i can assure you that this is a national treasury and belongs to Iran. muslims destroyed many things when they occupied iran including burning important books and they continue to do so to this day. it's sad to see that these few precious books had survived yet MUSLIMS get credit for them when they did nothing but to destroy everything. I don't know who the curators of this show are but I hope they know this that Iran will be free soon and we wont forget this.

  6. Anon, thanks for clarifying this, and so promptly. I need to study and research more about the history of this artwork. What a treasure it is. There have been so many tragedies, losses, misinterpretations and unspeakable destruction (of art, culture, history) between cultures throughout history. It's so important to keep the dialogue flowing so that we don't forget, and so that we all keep questioning and honing our knowledge of the past. Thanks for these comments.
